About the English verb trainer

This free tool helps kids study and practice English verbs: over a hundred of the most common verbs, regular and irregular, in the six tenses taught in elementary and middle school — present simple, present continuous, past simple, past continuous, future with will and present perfect. Each conjugation comes with the rule that builds it and the spelling changes explained, and the browser can read every form out loud.

How it works

• Study: pick a verb and a tense to see the full conjugation, the rule behind it and the spelling traps (-es and -ies, dropped e, doubled consonants). Type any verb, even one that is not in the list, and it is conjugated as a regular verb.
• Full verb: fill in the six persons of one verb in one tense. Spelling counts — a form that is almost right is flagged separately so the kid learns the exact spelling.
• Mixed practice: random persons, verbs and tenses drawn from the verbs you choose — all of them, regular only or irregular only. Irregular verbs in the past simple and present perfect are the fastest way to learn the famous three-form lists (go – went – gone).
• Rewards: a round with every answer right unlocks the Brick Breaker mini-game for a few minutes, and every verb done at 100% is saved in your records.

Why practice verbs this way

English verbs look easy — most forms are the same for every person — and that is exactly why kids trip on the details: the -s of he / she / it, the spelling of -ing and -ed, and the irregular past forms that simply have to be memorized. Writing the forms yourself and being corrected right away is what makes them stick, and seeing the rule next to the verb turns a list into a pattern.

Tips for parents

• Start with the present simple and the -s of he / she / it, then the present continuous — the two tenses kids use most when they speak.
• Add the past simple with regular verbs first, then a few irregular verbs at a time: be, have, do, go, see, eat, make, take.
• Use the "Listen" button: hearing the form helps with the sound of -ed (played, walked, wanted) and with the irregular forms.
• Review the "to review" list at the end of each round together — those are the forms worth a second look.
