About the Portuguese verb trainer

This free tool helps kids study and practice Brazilian Portuguese verbs: over a hundred of the most common verbs, regular and irregular, in the six tenses taught at school — presente, pretérito perfeito, pretérito imperfeito, futuro do presente, futuro do pretérito and presente do subjuntivo. Each conjugation comes with the rule that builds it, the endings highlighted and the spelling changes explained (fiquei, comecei, conheço, protejo), and the browser can read every form out loud in Portuguese.

How it works

• Study: pick a verb and a tense to see the full conjugation with the endings in colour, the rule behind it and the notes for that verb. Type any verb, even one that is not in the list, and it is conjugated as a regular verb.
• Full verb: fill in the six persons of one verb in one tense. Accents count — a form that is right except for an accent is flagged separately, so the kid learns the exact spelling.
• Mixed practice: random persons, verbs and tenses drawn from the verbs you choose — all of them, one conjugation at a time (-ar, -er, -ir) or the irregular ones only.
• Rewards: a round with every answer right unlocks a mini-game for up to a minute — short on purpose, so the practice stays the main event. The game is drawn at random from six, so the reward keeps changing, and every verb done at 100% is saved in your records. Ten right answers in a row — they can come from different rounds — unlock the big prize: five minutes of Castle Defense, a tower defense game. One mistake starts the streak over.

Why practice verbs this way

Portuguese verbs are very regular once the three families (-ar, -er, -ir) click, and the whole difficulty sits in two places: the spelling changes that keep the sound (ficar → fiquei, começar → comecei, conhecer → conheço) and a short list of irregular verbs that carry most of everyday speech (ser, estar, ter, ir, fazer, poder, querer, ver, vir, dar, pôr). Writing the forms yourself and being corrected right away is what makes them stick, and seeing the rule next to the verb turns a list into a pattern.

Tips for parents

• Start with the presente of ser, estar, ter and ir — four verbs that show up in almost every sentence — then add a regular verb from each family (falar, comer, partir).
• The pretérito perfeito (falei, comi, parti) is the everyday past in Portuguese. Practice it early; the imperfeito (falava, comia) comes next, for what used to happen.
• The subjuntivo is easier than it looks: it is built from the eu form of the present (faço → que eu faça, tenho → que eu tenha). Show that trick once and it clicks.
• Use the Listen button: hearing eu falo / você fala helps with the nasal sounds (ão, ãe, õe) that are hard to get from the page alone.
• Review the to-review list at the end of each round together — those are the forms worth a second look.
